Lake Zurich girl rewarded for bicycle safety

Lake Zurich police have rewarded a girl for practicing bicycle safety.

Officer Jennie Alber "cited" Katie Kochanny for riding her bike with a helmet this year. Katie and other children who were spotted by police wearing their helmets were entered into a prize drawing.

Katie wound up the winner and was presented with a new bike and a helmet during a Lake Zurich village board meeting in October.

Officer Patrick Stone developed the program with participation and support of Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy and George Garner Cyclery.

From Memorial Day through Labor Day, Lake Zurich officers are on the lookout for children who are wearing bicycle helmets. As part of the citations issued to the children, they receive a free kid's cone at the Oberweis in Lake Zurich.

George Garner Cyclery donated the bike that Katie received.
