Chicago police shoot, injure man after pulling over vehicle

CHICAGO (AP) - Officials say a Chicago police officer shot and wounded a suspect after pulling over a vehicle.

A spokeswoman for the agency that investigates police-involved shootings tells WFLD-TV in Chicago that officers patrolling the South Side pulled over a vehicle Sunday morning that had been reported stolen.

Independent Police Review Authority spokeswoman Mia Sissac said one officer opened fire, hitting a man multiple times. Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the man was struck in the lower extremities and no officers were injured.

Sissac said three people got out of the vehicle before "engaging" officers. A statement from police said it was an "armed encounter."

IPRA is investigating. The wounded man was taken to the hospital. His condition wasn't immediately known.
