Girls volleyball: Hersey hurries back for title at Lake Park

After falling to Fremd in two sets for the Mid-Suburban League title just four days ago, it didn't take long for Hersey's girls volleyball team to come back and secure a championship.

The Huskies (26-9) went 5-0 at the Lake Park Invite on Saturday in Roselle, winning all their matches in two sets, including the championship over Glenbrook South 26-24 25-15.

"What a way to bounce back after a frustrating week of volleyball," said Hersey coach Nancy Lill. "Our team is finding its rhythm at the right time and our defense was absolutely outstanding today."

Senior Emma Frankiewicz, who returned to the lineup on Thursday after missing a month with a broken hand, collected 57 digs.

Leading the way in the back row was Liz Solans with 65 digs followed by Amy Morgan (44), Maggie Reisel (25), Julia Coniglio (10) and freshman Kati Kaburov (8).

Kaburov (19 kills) missed a lot of action Saturday due to illness and sophomore Alessia Olhava did a nice job filling in for Hersey's top hitter.

Other top attackers for the Huskies were Morgan (29 kill), Zoe Strozewski (26), Allie Jedd (16) and Mary Clare O'Shea (9).

Morgan and Solans each served 5 aces while Reisel had 4 along with 109 setting assists.

Strozewski's 12 blocks led Hersey followed by Jedd's 8.

Mid-Suburban League champion Fremd (26-8) took third place.

After falling in three sets at Buffalo Grove on Tuesday, Conant (15-20, 1-4 in tourney) came back to top the Bison in two sets for their only win in the invite.

BG (7-24) went 2-3 in the tourney with wins over Glenbard North and Bartlett.

BG senior Marianna Galati led the attack against the Panthers with 7 kills while Lindsey Prommer had 4. Hannah Schuler dished out 63 assists in the three-set win.

Prommer, Claire Ferris and Mary Nowlan each had 4 kills in the two-set win over Bartlett with Schuler delivering 29 assists.

Lyons tournament: Prospect (24-11) went 2-3 and took eighth place, earning its wins over host Lyons and Shepard with losses to Edwardsville, Lake Zurich and York.

Leading the Knights on attack were Maggie Porwit (22 kills), Meghan Meredith (15), Mandy Withey (14), Mary Mazurek (13), Kaela Myers (7) and Paige Gerber (6), who set the offense and collected 78 assists.

Kendra Gancarz led with 4 aces followed by Val Thomas (3), Gerber (3) and Emma Coogan (2).

Meredith's 10 blocks led the Knights while Porwit added 8 and Withey 4.
