Maryland standout Likely out for season with torn ACL

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Maryland standout kick returner and defensive back Will Likely is out for the season with a torn knee ligament.

Likely tore his ACL while returning a punt in the second quarter Saturday in a 31-10 loss to Minnesota.

The senior leads the Terrapins (4-2, 1-2 Big Ten) with three pass breakups and ranks third on the team with 32 tackles. He also leads Maryland with 27.4 yards per kickoff return, including a 64-yarder in a 30-24 victory at Central Florida.

Likely owns or shares six different Maryland records. He broke a 76-year-old Big Ten record with 233 punt return yards in a win over Richmond last season. He took back three kicks for scores in 2015, including a 100-yard kickoff return against Iowa.

Maryland first-year coach DJ Durkin says: "I am confident Will has the work ethic, drive and focus to overcome this injury and continue his football career at the next level."
