9-0 St. Charles East rolls past Streamwood
The St. Charles East football team accomplished a lot in its 63-14 trouncing of Streamwood Friday night.
In addition to completing their regular season with a perfect 9-0 record, the Saints won outright the Upstate Eight River Division championship.
East also set school records for the most points scored in a regular season (374) and the fewest allowed by opponents (105).
"We had the opportunity to come into this game and break two records for the school," SCE coach Bryce Farquhar said. "So we played with intensity."
The Saints achieved these goals with Justin Jett, their starting fullback, on the bench. Farquhar opted to rest Jett and started senior Max Hatch instead.
"We were a little banged up right now so we had some secondary kids come in," said Farquhar. "I thought Max did an awesome job at fullback filling in for Justin."
Hatch responded by scoring 3 of the Saints' touchdowns while rushing for 182 yards on 20 carriers.
"We wanted to come out here and break the records and we did that," said Hatch. "We worked hard all summer and it came to a great end."
East dominated the Sabres (3-6, 1-5) on both sides of the ball in the first half.
The Saints (9-0, 6-0) scored on all 7 of their first half possessions, leading 49-0 at halftime.
East's defensive unit limited Streamwood to 19 yards in the first two quarters, picked off a Brendon Marton pass and recovered a Sabre fumble on a kickoff return.
Hatch started the Saints' scoring with a 1-yard plunge to end the first possession at the 7:09 mark in the first quarter. He also scored on runs of 1 and 10 yards in the first half. Dante Macaluso added a fourth rushing TD in the first 2 quarters, crossing the goal line on a 3-yard run.
While the Saints relied on their ground game for most of their yardage, rolling up 353 total rushing yards, Zach Mitchell was a perfect 6-for-6 for 131 yards in passing including 3 TD strikes in the first half. He connected with Justin Galante for a 2-yard score, Joshua Luedtke for 5 yards and Clayton Isbell for 20 yards.
Isabell's score with 1:25 left in the second quarter guaranteed a running clock in the second half.
Mitchell scored the team's eighth touchdown in the third quarter on a 3-yard run. Joey Sciarrino closed out the Saints' scoring with 5-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Jesse Rico scored both of Streamwood's TDs, the first in the third quarter on a 67-yard pass from Marton and the second on a 35-yard run in the fourth period.
