Muncie man gets 72 years in 4-month-old son's death, arson

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - A 24-year-old Muncie man has been sentenced to 72 years in prison in the death of his 4-month-old son last year.

The (Muncie) Star Press reports (http://tspne.ws/2eAzGbz ) that Delaware County Judge Marianne Vorhees said during Friday's hearing that the baby "lived almost every day of his life in pain, hunger and distress." She then sentenced Cory Wallace, who was convicted last month of five felonies including counts of neglect, arson, battery and obstruction of justice.

Prosecutors said Wallace failed to seek medical attention for his son after he sustained fatal head injuries, and then set fires to the infant's bedroom to try to cover up the cause of death.

Wallace's defense attorney asked for a 30-year sentence. Wallace declined to make a statement during the hearing.
