NW Indiana man found incompetent to stand trial for murder

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - A northwestern Indiana man accused of killing his 94-year-old mother in a fire at their house has been committed to a state psychiatric hospital before standing trial.

Porter Superior Court Judge Bill Alexa instructed Logansport State Hospital to treat 68-year-old Frederick Fegely of Ogden Dunes and return him to Porter County should he become competent to stand trial at a later date.

The Times of Northwest Indiana reports (http://bit.ly/2eeCE8C ) the move Friday followed three psychological evaluations, two of which determined he's currently incompetent to stand trial.

Fegely has been charged with murder and arson in the April 2015 fire about 10 miles east of Gary. His mother, Wanda Maxine Wunder, was found in an upstairs bedroom of the home. She died of smoke and soot inhalation and thermal injuries.
