Sisters in Crime Chicagoland to Offer Writing Workshops at Library

Writers from novice to multi-published are invited to the Sisters in Crime Chicagoland (SinCC) Workshops from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 12 in the Adult Classroom of the Schaumburg Township District Library, 130 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg.

This free series of workshops will be taught by SinCC authors, who will speak on a variety of writing and publishing topics. Registration is required. To register, call (847) 923-3347 or visit the Information Desk on the library's second floor.

"Writing is a solitary profession," said Susan Gibberman, coordinator of the event. "There are all kinds of reasons to attend writing workshops like these: to connect with a peer group, to hone your craft, and to give you time away from daily life to focus on your writing goals and determine your next steps. If you're looking for inspiration, encouragement, or guidance, mark your calendar for this event."

Author-taught workshops will cover a variety of topics. The exact order of the programs has not been finalized and may be subject to change.

"Plotting a Mystery" will be led by Gail Lukasik, author of many novels including Peak Season for Murder and The Lost Artist. This hands-on workshop will provide tips on how to write a compelling mystery, from plot ideas to creating suspense to structure and pacing. "Points of View" will be taught by Michael Dymmoch, author of the Caleb & Thinnes Mystery series and other books. Participants will learn the advantages/disadvantages of various points of view, and why it's important to keep them straight. Cheryl Yeko, author of Between Midnight and Dawn and numerous other romance novels, will lead the "Promotional Book Trailers" workshop.

She'll explain how to create intriguing book trailers and how to use them to grow your author brand. Author of 19 suspense novels, including Hostile Takeover and Dead Ringers, Michael Black will teach "Showing vs. Telling." Learn the difference between "showing" and "telling" and how and when to effectively use each technique.

Participants may choose any number of workshops to attend, as long as they have registered.
