Ex-Leeds, Wales goalkeeper Gary Sprake dies at 71

LEEDS, England (AP) - Gary Sprake, the goalkeeper of the great Leeds United team under Don Revie in the late 1960 and early 1970s, has died. He was 71.

Leeds announced the death of Sprake on Wednesday, without giving a cause of death.

Sprake played more than 500 games for Leeds from 1962-73, helping the team win the English League Cup in 1968, English league title in 1969 and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup - the equivalent of the modern-day Europa League - in 1968 and '71. He moved to Birmingham after losing his place in Leeds' team.

Sprake also played 37 times for Wales.

Leeds said the club will hold a minute's applause before kickoff in its next home match, against Norwich in the League Cup on Tuesday, as a mark of respect for Sprake.
