Barrington townhouse development on hold

A proposed 21-unit townhouse development in the Roslyn Road neighborhood of Barrington is apparently on hold, since the developers have canceled their appearance at an upcoming plan commission meeting, according to Greg Summers, Barrington's director of development services.

Neighbors who objected to the proposed development at the southwest corner of West Roslyn Road and North Cumnor Avenue, are hoping this means the end of it. The vacant land is adjacent to the GE Healthcare center at 540 Northwest Hwy.

Summers said the developers could come back with a different plan for the site, but they would have to start the application process over.

A representative with Laube Companies, one of the developers, could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Jodie Nettelhorst, president of the Roslyn neighbors' group opposing the development, said residents are happy about the news.

In a survey conducted by the neighbors over the summer, 98 percent of nearby residents said they were opposed to the project. At a July plan commission meeting, commissioners asked the residents and developers to work on a compromise, before the commission decided whether to recommend the townhouse plan to the village board.

Nettelhorst said they two sides met twice in August and hadn't made significant progress toward finding a compromise.

"We were not interested in moving too far off our position and they were not interested in moving too far off their position," Nettelhorst said.

She said the developers had reduced the size of the development from 21 units to 19 units but that didn't change the neighbors' position significantly.
