Illinois State University to honor 230-year-old red oak tree

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) - Illinois State University is commemorating a tree that's estimated to be about 230 years old. but is set to be removed this fall.

The university says the historic red oak near the Science Laboratory Building must be removed for safety reasons because of disease and decay.

At an event Wednesday, Fell Arboretum Curator Patrick Murphy will speak about the tree's history and efforts to preserve its genetic legacy.

The tree predates both the town of Normal and Illinois State University.
