Hanover Township receives weather preparedness recognition
The Hanover Township Department of Emergency Services was presented with certification as a StormReady Community by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration at a recent township board meeting.
According to the NOAA, the township has demonstrated various methods of monitoring weather, receiving watches and warnings from the National Weather Service, and for disseminating severe weather warnings throughout the community.
Township storm spotters also deploy to several locations in the community in advance of severe weather and report information to the NWS.
"StormReady recognizes the advanced planning, education, and awareness efforts taken by communities," says NWS Warning Coordination Meteorologist Mike Bardou. "No community is storm proof, but these preparedness efforts can help communities save lives." Hanover Township becomes the 73rd StormReady Community in Illinois.
"Our Emergency Services volunteers put in many hours of training for severe weather notification and response," said Brian P. McGuire, Hanover Township supervisor. "This certification further validates the hard work and dedication of the volunteers in service to the community."
The department is trained to respond to a wide range of emergency and nonemergency events to assist primary emergency responders or operate independently in times of natural or man-made disasters. This dedicated group of professional volunteers exists to provide a properly equipped, trained and ready unit to assist Hanover Township residents and the public safety agencies that serve them.
