LaCabana fundraiser to benefit literacy center

Aurora's Dominican Literacy Center and LaCabana Restaurant, 825 S. River St. in Aurora, will partner in a fundraiser for the center from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22. The public is invited.

According to Sister Kathleen Ryan, center director, the restaurant will donate to the center 15 percent of bills for lunches, dinners, carryouts and beverages.

Patrons are asked to mention the center when placing food orders.

Reservations are requested for groups of eight or more persons. Call (630) 859-8885.

The benefit is the second in a series of "Eat and Earn" fundraisers sponsored by the center in partnership with local restaurants.

Sister Ryan said, "Enjoy a wonderful time with friends and family while supporting our mission to help all women learn English. The Dominican Literacy Center appreciates the support of LaCabana."

Founded in 1992, the Dominican Literacy Center at 260 Vermont St. in Aurora provides free, woman-to-woman tutoring in reading, writing and speaking English skills.

Since its inception, the nonprofit center has served more than 2,500 Chicago-area women. The center also offers tutoring for women and men to prepare for the U.S. citizenship test.

Volunteers are needed to help about 40 women on a waiting list for tutoring.
