Sugar Grove to rebate sales tax to get gas station going again

Sugar Grove is helping a new owner get the old Citgo gasoline station and convenience store spiffed up and open again, with a sales tax rebate of up to $200,000.

Graham's C-Store Co. of Gages Lake is renovating the station at Galena Boulevard and Sugar Grove Parkway (Route 47). The station has been closed for more than a year.

Even when it was open, residents complained it had fallen into disrepair under the previous ownership, and that the station and store were poorly stocked and managed.

Sugar Grove Township assessment records indicate the station's buildings were built in 2000.

According to the seven-year agreement the village board approved Oct. 4, the owner plans to improve the lighting under the pump canopies, add more pumps, replace the fuel-storage tanks, improve surface drainage, demolish a kiosk building under the canopy, and renovate the convenience store.

The contract is contingent on the station receiving an occupancy permit by Nov. 30.

In the first and second years, Graham's C-Store will receive 100 percent of the village's portion of the sales tax; in years three through five, it will receive 75 percent; and in years six and seven it will receive 50 percent.

The rebate is capped at $200,000.

Sugar Grove has used sales tax rebates several times to attract developments.

It offered to rebate up to $1 million to get the Jewel-Osco store, which opened in 2006.

The village also signed a seven-year rebate agreement in 2014 to get an Ace Hardware store, wherein it will rebate up to $100,000 in sales tax.
