COD student ensembles to perform concert

The College of DuPage music program presents a concert featuring the Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, Small Group Jazz and the Percussion Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in Belushi Performance Hall at the McAninch Arts Center on the Glen Ellyn campus, 425 Fawell Blvd.

Incorporating a broad spectrum of ensembles performing a variety of musical selections, the concert is "a wonderful opportunity to highlight the collaborations between the various genres," said Choral Director Lee Kesselman.

"College of DuPage is home to a large group of student and community music-makers," he said. "Expect a concert of enthusiasm and creativity. You'll hear string and wind players, percussionists, jazzers and singers during this first public performance of the academic year."

Concert Choir and Chamber Singers perform under the direction of Kesselman,

Chamber Singers is a select, polished choral ensemble featuring primarily music majors singing a cappella music in many styles. Their performance will include music by visiting composer Alice Parker, as well as works with Native American themes and texts.

The Concert Choir is a large, energetic chorus performing a variety of choral music, including classical, Gospel and music from Appalachia. Its program features four Stephen Schwartz performances and includes selections from "Pippin," Disney's "Pocahontas" and "Children of Eden."

Chamber Orchestra, under director Alison Gaines, is a blended group composed of instrumentalists of student and community members, performing both traditional literature for small orchestra/chamber music from the 1700s through the early 20th century. The program features selections from "Water Music" Suite by G.F. Handel.

Percussion Ensemble, under director Ben Wahlund, is a chamber ensemble that studies and performs repertoire written specifically for the percussion family, as well as transcriptions adaptable to percussion concert selections. The ensemble features music from the contemporary genres, including world music and improvisation.

Small Group Jazz, under director Tom Tallman, addresses the fundamental concepts of jazz performance in an intimate setting, styling theory, history, communication and improvisation in real time.

Students also are encouraged to transcribe, compose original music or create arrangements of jazz standards. The group's program features a tribute to tenor saxophonists Hank Mobley and Wayne Shorter, with performances of Mobley's "Uh-Huh" and Shorter's "Adam's Apple."

Tickets to the concert are $6. For information, contact (630) 942-4000 or atthemac.org.
