Bartlett Library's literacy event a huge success

On Saturday, October 1, 120 Bartlett Library patrons attended the "Little Read" Literacy Event, which is a partnership between the Library and the Bartlett Rotary Club.

Upon arriving, the children were broken up into three groups: Babies, 3-5 year olds and kindergarten-first-graders.

In each group, Bartlett Rotarians as well as Interact members read different books. The books were "An Ocean of Animals" by Janine Scott, "The Little Red Hen (Makes a Pizza)" retold by Philemon Sturges and "Spot Goes to the Farm" by Eric Hill. After the reading part of the program was done, the children got to take the book home that was read to them.

The patrons then participated in a small craft where they decorated a pre-drawn hand, cut it out and then glued it to a drawn tree.

Youth & Teen Services Associate Andrea Monsivais explained that the craft "is a great example of what a community effort the [Little Read] program is."

All of the hands come together on the tree, showing that it took everyone to be there to make the program such a success.

It was then that nationally touring children's recording artist and award-winning producer Laura Doherty put on a concert for the patrons. Children stood right in the front row, happily dancing along to all the songs Doherty sang for them.

An upcoming Youth & Teen Services program is "Tammy Town presents Stranger Danger and Medical Emergency Safety Training" on Saturday, October 15 at 10 a.m. For all ages. Tammy Schulz, with more than 20 years of law enforcement experience, takes children on a trip through Tammy Town, a scenario-based training town, geared to prepare children for stranger danger experiences at home, in their community and to and from school. Participants will learn effective safety skills to keep themselves safe and what to do should someone they know suffer a medical emergency.
