Girls volleyball: Hersey gains one-match lead in MSL East

Senior Zoe Strozewski put down a match-high 6 kills and 4 blocks to help Hersey gain sole possession of first place in the Mid-Suburban East girls volleyball standings with a 25-12, 25-18 victory at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

The Huskies (18-4) improved to 7-1 in the East, to take a one-match lead over Wheeling (18-8, 6-2) which fell in two sets to Prospect.

Freshman Kati Kaburov added 4 kills for the Huskies followed by Mary Clare O'Shea (3) and Amy Morgan (3).

Senior Nadia Tarasova led BG (3-15, 1-7) with 6 kills.

Kaburov also served 3 aces while Tarasova had 2.

Senior Maggie Reisel (39-40) set the Huskies offense with 15 assists while classmate Liz Solans led the defense with 19 digs.

Senior Lindsey Prommer had 3 blocks for the Bison.

Prospect d. Wheeling: Kaela Myers (8 kills), Maggie Porwit (5), Meghan Meredith (3), Mary Mazurek (3) and Mandy Withey (2) led the attack for Prospect (16-6, 5-3) in a 25-20, 25-19 victory at Wheeling (18-8, 6-2)

Senior setter Paige Gerber handed out 18 assists for the Knights while Val Thomas collected 29 digs. Top blockers for Prospect were Meredith (4), Porwit (3), Mazurek (2) and Withey (2).

Timber Terrell paced Wheeling with 12 kills and 5 blocks. Junior Jessica Janowski handed out 15 assists and had 10 digs.

Hala Fakhoury also had 10 digs while Jazmyn Veloso had 9 and Shannon Kennedy 8.

Kamila Staniszewski out down 6 kills for the Wildcats, who visit Rolling Meadows today.

Palatine d. Conant: Claire Chaplinsky put down 20 kills and Corey Rinella added 10 for visiting Palatine in its 25-10, 23-15, 25-19 MSL West victory.

Sydney Christiansen was 96-of-96 setting with 37 assists as the Pirates (19-4, 7-1) remained tied for first in the West with Fremd.

Alyssa Kronberg was 17-of-17 on serve receive and collected 17 digs. Beverly Ryan had pair of blocks.

Yuri Hara (6 kills), Jorie Wachal (3 kills) and Michaela Vasalos (18 digs) led Conant (9-13, 2-6).

Rolling Meadows d. Elk Grove: Maddie Sellergren (7 kills), Kyra Amundson (4) and Katie Zanocco (3) were top attackers for host Rolling Meadows (17-10, 5-3) in a 25-18, 25-15 MSL East win.

Macie Robinson was 14-of-16 with 6 aces for the Mustangs while Natalie Klancnik had 3 aces followed by Zanocco (2) and Sellergren (2).

Klancnik (21-of-21) had 8 assists and Mallory King (18-of-18) added 4 assists.

EG (4-17, 0-8) was led on attack by Rachel Kandefer (6 kills) and Emma Slattery (2 kills). Mary Cronin handed out 8 assists and Johanna Duckmann had 7 digs.

Schaumburg d. Hoffman Estates: Mallory Gerber (8 kills, 9 digs), Morgan Sterrett (7 kills, 7 digs), Julia Spitelli (5 kills), Jordyn Harberts (17 assists, 6 digs, 15-of-15 serving), Gabby Paelmo (10 digs, 5 passes) and Michaela Encarnacion (3 kills) were among the top contributors for host Schaumburg (10-11, 3-5) in the 25-10, 25-0 MSL West victory.

Hoffman Estates (2-24, 0-8) was led by Natalie Pethes' 2 kills. Ashley Poland had 12 digs and Janiah Fowler made 2 blocks.

Marian Central d. St. Viator: Visiting Marian Central won the East Suburban Catholic 25-22 , 25-17 over St. Viator (13-14, 0-5) which was led by Catherine Hickey and Kate Nottoli who each had 7 kills. Kendall Claffey added 4 and Katie Kerrigan 2.

Michaela Mueller was 61-of-61 setting with 19 assists awhile Carrie Leazer had a team-high 17 digs.
