Evansville joins Indiana cities with bike-sharing program

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Organizers of a new bike-sharing program in Evansville hope it will lead to support for more recreational trails around the city.

The program started this week renting out 70 bikes that are available across seven stations, including some in the city's downtown, the University of Evansville campus and Deaconess Sports Park northeast of the city.

Evansville Area Trails Coalition president Don Jones says sponsors have covered the about $125,000 cost to start the program.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports (http://bit.ly/2dGZuSS ) the bike rentals cost $3 an hour and must be done through a smartphone app or through the Zagster website. College students can buy an annual pass for $30.

Indianapolis and West Lafayette are among the Indiana cities with similar bike-sharing programs.
