Chicago-area officer fatally shoots man outside nightclub

MARKHAM, Ill. (AP) - Police in suburban Chicago say an officer fatally shot a man while responding to reports of a fight in a nightclub parking lot.

Markham Police Chief Mack Sanders told the Chicago Tribune (http://trib.in/2dxNsii ) that the officer believed his safety was at risk from an armed man "in close proximity" and shot him around 3 a.m. Sunday. The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the man as 36-year-old Donte Jones of Maywood. An autopsy is planned Monday.

Markham is about 20 miles southwest of downtown Chicago.

Sanders says the officer, who has been with the department for four years, is on modified duty pending the investigation. He didn't explain what modified duty entails. The police chief says a weapon was recovered and charges are pending against one person who was arrested.
