Batavia 1st Ward alderman resigns

Batavia 1st Ward Alderman Carl Fischer has resigned because he is moving out of town.

Mayor Jeff Schielke announced the resignation at the city council's meeting Monday night.

Fischer was appointed to the seat in October 2014, and then elected to a four-year term in April 2015. Interested residents should write to him at the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave.

Schielke said he will accept applications for the vacancy until Oct. 18. That night, the city council will interview the candidates, and choose which person they want the mayor to appoint.

The person would be sworn in Nov. 7, and serve until the end of April.

Voters will get to choose who will fill out the second half of Fischer's term in the April election. Petition packets are available from the city clerk's office. Signatures can be collected now; the petitions must be turned in Dec. 12-19.

Fischer was not at Monday's meeting.
