The Latest: Police say attack shouldn't put people off

PARIS (AP) - The Latest on robbery of Kim Kardashian West in Paris (all times local):

10:40 p.m.

Johanna Primevert, chief spokeswoman for the Paris police department, says that the attack on Kim Kardashian shouldn't put off anyone thinking of coming to Paris.

"This is the result of people who obviously posed as policemen and who assaulted Ms. Kardashian in a private hotel in her room by threat of a weapon," Primevert told the AP Tuesday.

"This kind of incident is extremely rare in Paris. This is a star who is famous worldwide. Do not confuse what happened to Ms. Kardashian and probably was the result of an organized team who had planned their action with the assault of a tourist in front of Notre Dame (cathedral) or another tourist spot in Paris."

Primevert said the losses were estimated at several million euros but no exact number was yet available. She said an investigation would determine that, along with the details of exactly what happened.

"Clearly when you have a star like Kim Kardashian who has, I think, more than 48 million followers on Twitter ... I think this could have happened abroad just as easily as in Paris. It was really the celebrity who was targeted, with possessions that had been seen and noticed via social media, and it was these goods that the attackers targeted."

They all arrived separately and did not speak to the media. Video cameras lined barricades outside the building, capturing security guards milling about.

Jenner was seen leaving the New York City apartment where Kardashian West retreated to on Monday, hours after she was the victim of a robbery at gunpoint in Paris.

Jenner, wearing a long black fur coat, did not speak when she left the building. She exited in a black sports utility vehicle.

Paris' mayor, Anne Hidalgo, has urged politicians across the spectrum not to exploit the jewel theft from Kim Kardashian West for political gains in the lead-up to next year's presidential election.

Hidalgo says: "In a complicated context for tourism, in which boosting attendance must be the priority of all, using this incident for polemical purposes would amount to directly harming the tourism sector, which represents 500,000 jobs" in the Paris region.
