Boys golf: Record showing from Tenuta as Prospect, Barrington share overall MSL title

Nick Tenuta's historic effort came at the perfect time for Prospect.

The senior tied a 40-year-old Mid-Suburban League boys golf record for 18 holes by firing a 67 in the conference tournament on Tuesday at par-72 Buffalo Grove Golf Club.

That performance helped Prospect to a second-place team finish in the tournament with a 315. Taken with the Knights' victory over Barrington in their head-to-head meeting on Sept. 8, it earned Prospect a share of the overall league title.

Defending champ Barrington won Tuesday's tourney with a 307. Senior Tom Calbi paced the Broncos with 73, the nearest score to Tenuta.

"He's just had a terrific season," said Prospect coach Tom Martindale of Tenuta. "To play the way he did in these conditions was just remarkable."

Martindale said Tenuta missed six greens in regulation, but twice chipped in.

"Even when he missed those greens, it never felt like missing par was likely," Martindale said. "His short game was really spot-on."

Tenuta fired a 33 on the front 9 and a 34 on the back 9. Joining him as all-conference competitors for Prospect were sophomore Charlie Busch (11th, 81), sophomore Jack Knott (17th, 83) and seniors Robert Garmoe and Kevin Placko (22nd, 84).

Right behind Calbi's runner-up finish for Barrington were Tim Lim (third, 76) and Sean Dolan (fifth, 77). Jack Markham shot 81 and provided the fourth score for the Broncos in 11th place.

Conant junior Kevin Andjulis shot 76 to tie Lim in third position individually.

Senior Kody Newman had Palatine's top finish (fifth, 77), and Kyle Kornblum paced Rolling Meadows (sixth, 78).

Fremd's Colin Robinson and Michael Arango and Hoffman Estates' Alex Harrison each shot 80 (eighth).

Fremd placed third in the team standings at 325, followed by Rolling Meadows (327), Palatine (331) and Schaumburg (339).

Top finishers for their schools included Elk Grove freshman Jason Gamez (13th, 82), Schaumburg junior Nzelu Maitha (13th, 82), Wheeling junior D.J. Godlewski (17th, 83), Hersey senior Jason Deans (22nd, 84) and Buffalo Grove junior TJ Constertina (31st, 86).

In the final conference standings, Rolling Meadows and Fremd tied for third place, with Palatine in fifth, Schaumburg in sixth and Conant in seventh.
