Boys soccer: Second-half surge lifts Glenbrook N. past Vernon Hills

Vernon Hills' boys soccer team has been competitive all season, and the Cougars were again Tuesday night.

Well, for one half, anyway.

Glenbrook North scored 7 unanswered goals in the second half and blanked Vernon Hills 7-0 in Central Suburban League North Division action.

With the win, the Spartans (12-1-1) clinched the division title with a 4-0 mark because Deerfield (2-0-2) tied Highland Park 1-1 also on Tuesday. Vernon Hills (8-7) finished its first season in the CSL North with a 2-3 mark.

"(Glenbrook North) is ranked second in state and they're deserving to be on top," Vernon Hills coach Mike McCaulou said. "They have electric, attacking, creative players. First half, we were super disciplined and super organized. We had a couple of chances to score in that first half."

Vernon Hills keeper Brennan Reback made 12 stops, including a penalty kick.

Timmy Isora opened the scoring on a header off a Jackson Grabil free kick in the 44th minute. The Spartans added another goal three minutes later, as Sahil Modi scored unassisted. In the 50th minute, Robbie Fraser scored off a cross from Ryan Golde for a 3-0 advantage, and it got only worse for the visitors.

"(Vernon Hills) was a good team and they were very organized," Glenbrook North coach Paul Vignocchi said. "They had a good plan, and their keeper had some great saves. We got a little fire in our guys at halftime."
