St. Charles North rolls past Glenbard East
Friday night was Week 5 of the Illinois high school football season. It's the midway point of the schedule and perhaps a time for teams to reflect how far they've advanced to that point.
St. Charles North liked how it stood after cruising past host Glenbard East 46-2 in Lombard in an Upstate Eight Conference crossover.
"We're doing well. Last week was a big disappointment (a 28-21 loss to St. Charles East) and I'm really proud of the kids. We had a tough week of practice and they knew what had to be done," said North Stars coach Rob Pomazak. "We're 4-1 and that's the best start in school history. But we face some good teams on the backend of the schedule."
St. Charles North led just 7-2 after the first quarter on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Zach Mettetal to Grant Belich on the team's second drive of the game. The Rams (0-5) got their only points of the night on a bad snap from the North Stars that went into the end zone and out for a safety.
The team proceeded to rack up 25 unanswered points in the second quarter to lead 32-7 and then score twice in the third period.
"Our first few drives weren't that good. Then everyone got their stuff together and we started playing as a team and we executed effectively," Mettetal, who threw two touchdown passes, said.
The North Stars threw for 172 yards during the first two quarters, but two of the three touchdowns scored in the key second quarter were on runs from Lucas Segobiano and Eric Lins. Kicker Adam Durocher nailed a 31-yard field goal as time expired before halftime. Jack Lewis caught the lone TD pass of the period.
"We knew (Glenbard East) would have a lot of energy because of homecoming and we wanted to come in and execute. The guys did a good job with field position," Pomazak said. "Zach performed well. Eric ran well and you can't say enough about Lucas Segobiano."
St. Charles North worked fairly quickly in the third quarter for their final two scores of the contest. The North Stars enjoyed good field position to start drives the entire night and their first drive of the second half started at the Rams 41 and Mettetal hit Durocher on a 26-yard pass and three plays later, Lins ran it in from the 6.
The North Stars' defense was effective all night and Tyler Nubin intercepted a pass on the ensuing Glenbard East drive and his team had the ball on the Rams' 36-yard line. On the fourth and final play of the drive, Michael Hohensee, in at quarterback, connected on a 9-yard throw to Billy Durocher and that started a running clock.
Glenbard East's best chance to scored came in the first quarter when the Rams went on an 8-play, 72-yard drive with the help of the passing and running of quarterback Bret Bushka. But it stalled at the 14.
St. Charles North stays on the road this coming Friday with a trip to Elgin and return to UEC River play. The Rams are back in UEC Valley competition with a Saturday game against East Aurora at Aurora Christian High School.
