Girls volleyball: Wheeling perfect in first MSL East round

Wheeling's girls volleyball team finished the first round of Mid-Suburban East play undefeated with a 25-13, 25-13 over Elk Grove on Thursday night.

The visiting Wildcats improved to 16-7 and 5-0 and lead Hersey (15-4, 4-1) by one match.

Senior Timber Terrell put down 13 kills to lead the Wildcats' offense which also received 4 kills apiece from Kamila Staniszewski and Amanda Prause . Rochelle Laude added 3.

Setter Jessica Janowski served 4 aces with 23 assists and Staniszewski had 3 aces with 8 digs.

Rachel Kandefer (7 kills) and Isabel Michniak (4) paced the Grenadiers (2-12, 0-5), who received 9 digs from Jenny Banak. Mary Cronin handed out 8 assists and Lexi Chirbas 5.

Hersey d. Rolling Meadows: Kati Kaburov, Sammi Steger and Amy Morgan each put down 6 kill for host Hersey (15-4, 4-1) in a 25-12, 25-20 MSL East win.

Maggie Reisel handed out 18 assists while Liz Solans (19 digs), Julia Coniglio (11) and Morgan (10) paced the back row.

Steger also had 4 blocks while Solans (13-of-14) and Coniglio (12-of-12) each served 2 aces.

Maddie Sellergren (6 kills), Katie Zanocco (3 kills) and Madeline Rebsamen (2) led the attack for Meadows (14-10, 2-3).

Mallory King (5 assists) and Natalie Klancnik (4) set the offense while Macie Robinson collected 7 digs and Klancnik 6.

Barrington d. Hoffman Estates: Host Barrington (8-10, 4-1) posted 25-12, 25-22 triumph and was led by Gabby Morris (5 kills, 2 aces), Kate Shechtman (4 kills) and Chloe Layton (9 assists).

Hanna Saurbier and Natalie Pethes paced Hoffman (0-17.0-5) with 2 kills apiece while setter Kathleen Gueco had 6 assists.

Prospect d. Buffalo Grove: Maggie Porwit (8 kills), Kaela Myers (7) and Mary Mazurek (4) and Mandy Withey (2) led the Prospect attack in a 25-19, 25-16 MSL East win.

Val Thomas served 4 aces with 14 digs and Paige Gerber handed out 20 assists as the Knights improved to 9-5 and 3-2.

Kim Barton, Nadia Tarasova and Lindsey Prommer each had 2 kills for BG (3-12, 1-4) which received 9 digs from Kiarra Akiyoshi.

Schaumburg d. Conant: Mallory Gerber (5 kills), Morgan Sterrett (5 kills) and Julia Spitelli (3 kills) led the attack for Schaumburg (9-9, 2-3) in a 25-20, 25-22 MSL West triumph.

Jordyn Harberts handed out 18 assists and Gabby Paelmo collected 8 digs for the Saxons.

Jorie Wachal (9 kills), Yuri Hara (8) and Ania Baker (7) led the attack for Conant (8-11, 1-4) which received 9 digs from Michaela Vasalos.

Maine West d. Vernon Hills: Maine West (10-8) posted a 23-25, 25-16, 28-26 nonconference win as Jessica Riedl led the way with 16 kills and 14 digs.
