'IN-SIGHT' group to discuss life, literature and art

St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church is launching a new season of IN-SIGHT, a discussion group for teens and adults who want to discuss life as viewed through the prism of art and literature.

The IN-SIGHT group meets informally from 7 to 9 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday each month, beginning Sept. 27, at the church, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville. Meetings will continue through May 23.

IN-SIGHT is dedicated to reading and discussing a variety of literary works and pieces of art "that is more than just an appreciation of literature, art or music," said Chari Rosales, director of St. Thomas adult faith formation and spirituality.

"This is reading with a purpose … the purpose of seeing our own everyday life experiences against the various backgrounds fashioned by the creators of literature and art.

A discussion that includes an exchange of views also can generate new and different insights into life experiences, she added.

Individuals of high school age and older are welcome to attend the adventures in reading and appreciation every month or as often as their schedules permit. Discussions will be facilitated by Neil Phipps and Carrie Wujek, both St. Thomas parishioners.

Topics for discussion during the 2016-17 season will range from the classic to the contemporary, with selections running the gamut from works by J.R.R. Tolkien and Rainier Maria Rilke to Elie Wiesel and Dr. Seuss. The finalized list of topics will be available at the introductory meeting.

Beginning its second season, IN-SIGHT was born following a series of discussions at St. Thomas during winter 2014. That series was dedicated to reading and discussing how poets and fiction writers addressed the concept of atonement in their works.

"Those who attended found the discussions so inspiring, exciting and interesting that they wanted more. And they wanted it on an ongoing basis," Rosales said.

Registration for IN-SIGHT is requested by Thursday, Sept. 22. For information or to register, contact Marge Coronado, religious education assistant, at mcoronado@stapostle.org or (630) 355-8980, ext. 118.
