Woodland Community Invited to Green Day of Service on Sept. 24

Woodland Community Consolidated School District 50 invites students staff, parents and community members to help make Woodland Primary School a healthier, more sustainable learning environment as part of the Green Apple Day of Service to be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on September 24 at the school, 17366 W. Gages Lake Road, Gages Lake.

The Green Apple Day of Service, an initiative from the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council, brings together advocates from around the world each year and encourages them to take action in their communities through service projects at local schools. The Day of Service, now in its fourth year, provides an opportunity for students, teachers, parents, elected officials, organizations, companies and more to transform all schools into healthy, safe, cost-efficient and productive learning places.

The day will feature a variety of fun projects for children and adults such as painting murals in the school, painting interactive stencils for our blacktop and playground, cleaning up the butterfly garden and our walking trail. All ages are invited to attend and participate. Participants are asked to wear comfortable clothing that is appropriate for painting and working outdoors. Rain or shine, the event will take place. There are projects scheduled for indoors and outdoors.

"The local service projects help to make schools healthier and more sustainable and it's a feel-good day," said Primary School Principal Stacey Anderson. "Children need to know that they can make a difference and make a big impact just by participating!"

The Primary School was a Green Ribbon School winner in 2014 and the staff remains dedicated to modeling and teaching students how to care for their school and the environment. Even the youngest students in the district are involved in making their school environment safe, healthy and beautiful.

Held each year on the last Saturday in September, the Green Apple Day of Service presents an opportunity for students, teachers, parents, elected officials, organizations, companies and more to take action in their communities and demonstrate that where we learn matters.
