Capitals sign defenseman Orlov to $2.57 million, 1-year deal

TORONTO (AP) - The Washington Capitals re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Dmitry Orlov to a $2.57 million, one-year contract.

General manager Brian MacLellan announced the deal Wednesday after Orlov finished practice with Russia at the World Cup of Hockey.

The 25-year-old with offensive talent and a penchant for mistakes had eight goals and 21 assists for Washington last season. Orlov played all 82 games after missing the entire 2014-15 season with a wrist injury.

Orlov showed he could stay healthy and boost the offense even if his risk and reward style got him into trouble. In 201 NHL games he has 14 goals and 46 assists.

He's playing significant minutes with Capitals teammates Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov at the World Cup. Russia faces Finland in its round-robin finale Thursday.
