Carbondale limits video gambling to 100 terminals

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - Carbondale officials are limiting the number of video gambling terminals allowed in the city.

The Southern Illinoisan reports (http://bit.ly/2cmKzvQ ) the City Council voted Tuesday to cap the number of machines at 100.

Currently there are 74 terminals operating at 17 locations. Four other locations have applications pending with the Illinois Gaming Board. That could bring the total to 94.

City Manager Gary Williams says city officials think the games and their signage are starting to create a negative image for Carbondale. Councilwoman Jessica Bradshaw says the games in bars and restaurants are distracting to other customers.

The Illinois Gaming Machine Operators Association says the machines have helped businesses and created jobs. The group said Wednesday that video gambling has generated about $785 million in tax revenue since 2012.
