Illinois State, Illinois Wesleyan launch Peace Corp program

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) - Two central Illinois universities are working together to prepare students who are interested in serving in the Peace Corps.

According to The Pantagraph (http://bit.ly/2cRkDfP ), Illinois State University in Normal and Illinois Wesleyan University in adjacent Bloomington started the new Peace Corps Prep Program together. The idea is to work on areas that would be important if they joined the Peace Corps such as leadership and foreign language proficiency.

Peace Corps official Sheila Crowley attended the launch of the program on Tuesday. She said about 23,000 people apply for 5,000 available positions in the Peace Corps every year.

ISU President Larry Dietz said more than 530 of that school's alumni have served in the Peace Corps. Illinois Wesleyan President Eric Jensen said his school has produced about 130 Peace Corps volunteers.
