On Sept. 25th: Adult Learn to Swim Class Begins at Five Seasons Northbrook

If you are an adult who wants to swim-but doesn't know how or where to begin-then Five Seasons Family Sports Club in Northbrook is a great place to dive in amidst a nurturing, non-competitive atmosphere.

Starting on Sunday, September 25th, and continuing over the next two Sundays (October 2nd and October 9th), Marcia Cleveland and Mark Mershon will teach an Adult Learn to Swim Program at the club, 1300 Techny Road.

Each session will be from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Weather permitting, instruction will occur in the club's outdoor pool. Alternatively, as needed, any given session may be moved to the club's indoor pool.

Cleveland and Mershon are U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS) certified instructors who are both accomplished competitors and longtime instructors. Holding a host of safety certifications including CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation), they have guided hundreds of students, ranging from beginners to highly competitive open water swimmers.

Among other credentials, Cleveland swam the English Channel in 1994, a nearly 10-hour endeavor for the former Yale swimmer and current Winnetka resident.

At Five Seasons, class size is limited to six people to enable individualized instruction.

"We always tell people, 'come as you are,'" said Cleveland. "All they have to do is bring a swimsuit and we'll show them how to be comfortable in the water."

Learning how to swim represents "a huge step," she added. "Swimming is a life-saving skill. I do understand the fear that people have when they are not able to swim."

One of the most rewarding aspects of coaching beginners, said Cleveland, is to see them go from "barely being able to put their feet in the water to diving in with confidence only a month later."

Swimming has numerous health benefits, and provides a non-weight bearing way to work out for anyone who is recovering from an injury or has other physical challenges, she added.

For club members, the fee is $50 per session, or $120 for all three sessions. For non-members, the rate is $60/session or $150 for all three. Individuals can register at the club's front desk or by contacting Cleveland at 847-227-7202.
