Suburban Vascular Neurologist Talks About Strokes to Senior Living Community

Strokes, according to Dr. Daniel Cacioppo, a neurologist with Northwest Community Health Care, are among the top health fears of people as they age. Rightly so, he said, as strokes, heart attacks and cancer are the major causes of mortality in adults. Additionally he said, strokes result in the highest rate of morbidity, or disability.

Dr. Cacioppo, who specializes in vascular neurology, will talk about strokes to residents and guests at a special informational program at Sedgebrook in Lincolnshire, later this fall.

Dr. Cacioppo said that approximately a million adults in the U.S. have a stroke every year. There are however, preventative measures that can help reduce the likelihood of suffering a stroke. "The top five risk factors are diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, smoking and genetic profile. All but the genetic profile, are modifiable risks," he said.

Dr. Cacioppo said that tremendous strides have been made in either reversing or fixing a stroke as it happens in the hospital. "Time is absolutely of the essence. It's important to get to the hospital as soon as possible, where medications can be administered and interventions can be done promptly. Northwest Community Hospital is an accredited stroke center, which means we're among the best in dealing with strokes. We have an entire stroke team that can manage an acute stroke. Acute intervention can mitigate and even reverse stroke symptoms in some cases." The stroke team, of which Dr. Cacioppo is a member, includes radiologists, neuro surgeons, rehab specialists, neuro interventionists and more.

Dr. Cacioppo said that longer-term treatment for strokes is constantly improving. "We look at the patient's risk factor, and target treatment accordingly to prevent the next event, through things like medications, blood thinners, statin medication to lower cholesterol, medications to lower blood pressure, and diabetes management," he said.

"Of course lifestyle is key in preventing strokes. Peoples' lifestyles make a huge difference. If you don't exercise, don't watch your weight, don't watch what you eat or don't sleep well, it can lead to a number of health problems down the line. Lifestyle is very important," he said.

When Dr. Cacioppo presents at Sedgebrook he will talk about different kinds of strokes, how to identify symptoms, the risk factors and what happens when you go to the hospital because of a stroke.

"A community like Sedgebrook is great for potentially preventing or delaying health issues because residents have easy access to a healthy lifestyle including lots of activities, healthy eating, a fitness program, on-site medical practice and more," he said.

"We love having resources like Dr. Cacioppo available to talk to our residents and the surrounding community about ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle," said Deann Daniel, executive director of Sedgebrook. "Our residents are highly educated and interested in learning how to maintain their independence and good health in their retirement years."

Dr. Cacioppo will present at Sedgebrook on November 4th. The presentation is open to the public. For additional information or to RSVP call Quimby at 847-876-2109.
