Early night football game commemorated in Illinois town
WESTVILLE, Ill. (AP) - In 1928 a pair of small-town eastern Illinois teams played what was at least one of the country's first night high school football games.
On Friday the teams, Westville and Milford/Cissna Park, will meet and commemorate the occasion.
Paul Stines' father, also named Paul, played in that September 1928 game. The younger Stines tells The News-Gazette in Champaign (http://bit.ly/2chzmQD ) he is proud his dad played in the contest so he helped fund a plaque that will be unveiled before the game at the Westville Tigers' field.
The game is often cited as the first high school game played under permanent lights but there are conflicting claims.
Some say a night game was played in Wyoming in 1925. And temporary lighting was used for a game in Elgin, Illinois, in 1898.
