Authorities: Man who hit women crossing street was drunk

An Antioch man who drove his vehicle into two women crossing a street has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, officials said.

William V. Lonergan, 55, of the 1000 block of East Road, was intoxicated when he turned his Ford F-250 north onto Toft Street from Lake Street in Antioch about 9:30 p.m. July 14 and struck the women, authorities said.

Both women were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment of injuries they suffered in the crash.

An investigation by Antioch police and the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force determined Lonergan had a blood-alcohol level above the legal threshold of .08 percent at the time of the crash, authorities said.

Lonergan was charged Sept. 9 with two counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol. Each is a felony that could put Lonergan behind bars for up to three years, authorities said.

Lonergan turned himself in to authorities Sept. 13 and was released after posting the required 10 percent of his $50,000 bail.

He is due back in court Sept. 27.
