Fallout continues from Elk Grove library referendum bid

It's been days since a campaign for an Elk Grove library district referendum ended, but those on either side of the issue are still arguing about it.

Tim Burns, an Elk Grove Township Elementary District 59 board member, sent an email Sept. 6 to Cook County State's Attorney and Clerk officials informing them of his decision to withdraw his petitions seeking a referendum to create a library district in unincorporated Elk Grove Township.

Thinking the matter was over, Burns didn't show up for a previously-scheduled court hearing two days later.

But lawyers for the Elk Grove library and township - opponents of Burns' referendum - did.

The library put out a news release condemning Burns for not attending the court hearing to formally withdraw.

"I'm really disappointed that Mr. Burns has caused our library and the township legal fees based upon his frivolous and unfounded action," said Gil Schumm, the library board president.

Burns, a former library board member, said he thinks library and township officials "wanted a fight" on the issue. "I don't think there would be anything other than a bolt of lighting from God to let these people know (the referendum) is done."
