Buffalo Grove Fire Department holds open house

Buffalo Grove department holds an open house Sept. 17

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at 1051 Highland Grove Drive will feature a variety of learning activities, including:

• Vehicle Extrication Demo: Using a donated vehicle, fire personnel will demonstrate the latest tools and technologies to extricate someone from a vehicle.

• Junior Firefighter Challenge: Grade-school age children can put on fire gear, spray water and "chop" with an ax.

• Fire Extinguisher Demonstration: Using a propane fire prop, techniques for extinguishing a fire are demonstrated. Attendees then try their skill at putting out a fire with a handheld extinguisher.

• Firefighter Clothing Display: Information on gear and the level of protection it provides.

• House of Hazards: Cutaway model of a house used to show areas of danger.

• Flight for Life: An aeromedical helicopter will land (if available) and the flight crew will explain what they do.

• Fire Pole: Children can feel how firefighters of the past had to slide down a fire pole to get from the second floor to the first.

• Kids' Smoke House: A trailer from the Lake County Fire Chiefs Association is used to demonstrate the proper way to react to a smoke detector sounding and how to best exit a building.

• Puppet Show: Fire safety messages communicated in a fun and entertaining way for the younger crowd.

• Sprinklers: Their effectiveness is demonstrated on two rooms of furniture, one without a home fire sprinkler system and one with a sprinkler.

• Displays: Other agencies, such as hospitals, utilities, railroads and Northwest Central Dispatch, set up displays to explain there services.
