Girls volleyball: Wheeling stuns Hersey in three sets

Wheeling's girls volleyball team stunned 13-time defending Mid-Suburban East champion Hersey 20-25, 25-23, 25-16 on Tuesday night as senior Timber Terrell put down a match-high 19 kills for the Wildcats.

It was Wheeling's first win over Hersey since 2007 when Rita Runyard was the Wildcats' varsity coach and current coach Jason Kopkowski was in charge of the junior varsity.

Kopkowski, now in his ninth season as the varsity coach, said serving was the key for the host Wildcats (13-7, 2-0).

"We gave ourselves as chance by missing only 3 serves out of 70 attempts," Kopkowski said. "We made key adjustments on defense allowing us to get cleaner digs."

Setter Jessica Jankowski (21 assists) and Terrell with 14 digs apiece followed by Jazmyn Veloso (9), Hala Fakhoury (8), Kamila Staniszewski (8) and Shannon Kennedy (8)

Other top attackers were Staniszewski (3 kills), Amanda Prause (3) and Rochelle Laude (2).

"We stayed aggressive with out offense," Kopkowski added. "And we came up with big block kills when it counted."

The Huskies were without libero Emma Frankiewicz, who broke a bone in her hand a week ago and is out indefinitely.

"Her absence has greatly affected our team," said Hersey coach Nancy Lill. "We couldn't pass and then couldn't put the ball in the court. Wheeling played inspired defense and had a total team effort. They deserved the win."
