Boys cross country: In the Finish, fifth fits Fremd's Peterson

Fremd senior Danny Peterson has definitely answered the bell this season in boys cross country.

The Viking senior wasted little time in establishing his position on a muddy state course, running to an impressive fifth-place finish in 15:22.6 against elite runners in the First to the Finish Invitational at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

Lyons Township senior Vince Zona (14:59.8) edged Minooka senior Soren Knudsen (15:01.7) for the individual title.

Hinsdale Central senior Blake Evertsen (15:06.3) took third, followed by Lyons Township junior Danny Kilrea (15:07.6).

All four of those runners finished in the top 11 at the Class 3A race last season, adding to the impressive finish for Peterson.

"It was a really nice race for Danny," said Fremd coach Darius Sanchez. "It was a tough field and it was nice to see him go up there with that lead pack from the get go."

Peterson (16:29.5) finished second the Crystal Lake South Invitational last weekend and continued his promising season on Saturday.

"It was a nice benchmark today," said Sanchez. "I think he will continue to get more confident and continue to get better and better."

Junior Matt Wallace (16:00.6) finished in 36th place, combining with Peterson in leading Fremd to a 10th-place team finish.

Downers Grove North won the team title with 66 points, placing five runners in the top 24.

Lyons Township took second (87 points) followed by Hinsdale Central (162 points).

Hoffman Estates senior Jack Worman (16:02.9) gave the Hawks a 37th-place finish, while Buffalo Grove junior Mitchell Guittar (16:12.1) took 52nd place for the Bison.
