Huntley rolls up 57 on Dundee-Crown

It seemed like every time Eric Mooney got his hands on the football, it resulted in a Huntley touchdown.

The Red Raiders' junior signal caller found the end zone on each of his first three rushing attempts, then displayed his versatility with 3 passing touchdowns as part of a convincing 57-14 Fox Valley Conference home victory Friday night over a depleted Dundee-Crown squad that dressed only 28 players.

"We came out ready to play and the offensive line dominated," Mooney said. "I just did what the coach called and we took what they gave us."

"Eric's the real deal," said Huntley coach Matt Zimolzak. "He's a guy that can run the ball and throw the ball. He's got some reads he has to make and when he makes those reads he's a really good quarterback."

Mooney finished with 76 yards rushing and 109 passing while senior Mike Ahmer racked up 114 yards on 15 carries to help Huntley (2-1, 2-1) rebound from last week's disappointing 31-20 loss to Prairie Ridge.

"Coming off a loss we just wanted to get after it and I think we did that on both sides on the ball," said Ahmer, who scored his first touchdown of the season on a 2-yard plunge in the second quarter.

After Dundee-Crown punted on its first possession, the Red Raiders needed just three plays to score as Mooney took a quarterback draw and scampered 52 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown.

The Red Raiders only needed to cover 13 yards for their next two scores. An errant Chargers' snap on a punt attempt led to Mooney's 2-yard TD run and Olalere Olidipo's blocked punt set up Mooney for another 6-yard score and a 21-0 lead with 3:08 left in the opening quarter.

"When both of your long snappers go down and you have three other guys out that play both ways, it's tough," said Chargers coach Mike Steinhaus.

Trailing 28-0 early in the second quarter, Dundee-Crown (0-3, 0-3) marched 80 yards on 8 plays for a score.

Senior quarterback Conor Ryan went 5-for-5 passing with Mike Grant making a pair of catches for 29 yards before capping the impressive drive with a 4-yard touchdown run up the middle.

"I loved how the kids kept fighting even though we were short-handed," Steinhaus said. "We'll learn from this and move on."

Mooney closed out the half with scoring strikes of 13 and 38 yards to Alec Coss then connected with Ryan Antonsen for a 6-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Melvin Aninagyei-Bonsu raced 43 yards for the final Red Raiders' touchdown while Ricky Ibarra scored on a 10-yard run late for Dundee-Crown.

"We needed to make up for last week and turned things around," Zimolzak said.
