Girls volleyball: Wauconda, Lakes, Grayslake C. win league openers

Nicole Carazas had 9 kills and 7 digs, and Hayley Redmann and Taylor Arden added 5 kills apiece, as Wauconda's girls volleyball team beat host Antioch 25-20, 25-22 in a Northern Lake County Conference opener on Thursday night.

Jane Sakowicz tallied 20 digs, 3 aces, 5 assists and 2 kills for Wauconda (6-8). Summer Olsen dished out 12 assists for the Bulldogs.

Lakes d. Grayslake North: Katie Billetdeaux's 8 kills and 2 blocks helped the Eagles to a 25-18, 25-18 win in their Northern Lake County opener.

McKenna Lahr contributed 7 kills, 8 digs and 1 ace for Lakes (9-2). The Eagles' other contributors included Erica Grant (4 kills, 6 digs, 2 blocks), Keelan Bell (2 kills), Kelly Zeason (1 kill, 4 digs), Paige Bartlett (11 digs, 1 ace) and Rachel Orpano (24 assists, 7 digs, 2 aces).

Grayslake North was led by Abby Fish with 6 kills and 2 blocks. Erin McBriarty and Jenna Pozezinski had 10 and 8 digs, respectively, for the Knights.

Grayslake Central d. Grant: Morgan Anderberg slammed 7 kills, as the Rams captured a 25-19, 18-25, 25-18 win in their Northern Lake County opener.

Grayslake Central (7-6) also received 5 kills and 10 assists from Lauren LaBeck. Abby Marassa and Lizzie Twardock each served 5 aces, while Cassidy Beshel and Elisabeth Koshy each posted a pair of blocks. Twardock also dished out 8 assists.

"It was great to get our first NLCC win against a very solid Grant team," Grayslake Central coach Jason Janczak said. "Our girls showed great resolve in the match and stepped up when we needed them to."

St. Viator d. Vernon Hills: The Cougars lost 25-14, 25-17 in nonconference action to fall to 2-8.
