2 Batavia aldermen won't seek election next year

Two Batavia aldermen have indicated they won't seek election in the spring.

Fifth Ward Alderman Kevin Botterman announced his decision on Facebook earlier in the week. Third Ward Alderman Kyle Hohmann has also said he won't run. Hohmann was elected in 2013 and Botterman was appointed to fill a vacancy in February 2015.

The terms of 1st Ward Alderman Michael O'Brien, 2nd Ward Alderman Marty Callahan, 4th Ward Alderman Paula Mueller, 6th Ward Alderman Nick Cerone and 7th Ward Alderman Drew McFadden also expire in April.

Mueller, Cerone and McFadden say they intend to seek another term. Mueller was appointed in July 2015 to fill a vacancy. Cerone, McFadden and Callahan were elected to their first terms in 2013. O'Brien has been on the council since 2009.

O'Brien and Callahan said they are still deciding.

Mayor Jeff Schielke's term also expires in April. He has been mayor since 1981.

Schielke said he has not decided yet. As he usually does, he is consulting with residents he respects, asking their advice.

"i just want to do what is in the best interest of the community," he said.

People can start collecting signatures on election petitions Sept. 20. Filing is Dec. 12 to 19.
