Kane County to resume electronics recycling Monday

Kane County will resume its residential electronics recycling program Monday.

A drop-off site will open at 517 Fabyan Parkway in Batavia, the site of the former Kane County jail.

It will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

A South Elgin site will open Sept. 19 at its old public works facility, 735 Martin Drive. it will be open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

The third site is at the West Dundee public works facility, 900 Angle Tarn. It'll be open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays starting Sept. 26.

People will have to pay to dispose of television sets and computer monitors. The fee is $25 for those with screens 20 inches or smaller, and $35 for larger ones. You can pay at the site with exact cash or a credit card.

You can also pay in advance at recycle.eworksesi.org, and bring the receipt with you to the site.

Other items that will be accepted include cable- and satellite-television receivers, cables, cords, cellphones, circuit boards, computers, computer batteries, digital converter boxes, digital recorders, DVD players, fax machines, hard drives, keyboards, microphones, portable music players, printers, scanners, VCRs, and small-scale servers.

There will be workers at the drop-off locations.

Security cameras will be set up to record any after-hours dumping of materials. Illegal dumping is a misdemeanor crime, punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of as much as $2,500.

The county will have drive-through collections from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 24 and Oct. 8 at the Kane County circuit court clerk/branch court building at 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles. It will accept electronics and books those days. On Nov. 12, it will accept electronics, books and liquid latex paint and provide confidential shredding of documents.
