Illinois man who shot rival in front of family sentenced

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) - An Illinois man found guilty of shooting another man dead in front of his family at a restaurant has been sentenced to life in prison.

Will County prosecutors say 33-year-old Christopher Thompson of Joliet shot Gerrardo Franchini nine times in the head and body as he ate breakfast with his wife, 5-year-old daughter and 4-year-old niece in August 2013.

The two men had been involved in an ongoing dispute.

A Will County circuit court judge sentenced him to life plus 60 years on Wednesday.

State's Attorney James Glasgow says in a statement that Thompson "displayed a demonic disregard" for the children and everyone else in the restaurant.
