Wheeling athlete earns double medals at Junior Olympics

Cori Lee, a Wheeling 8-year-old, earned two silver medals at the Taekwondo Junior Olympics, which was recently held at the Greater Richmond Convention Center in Virginia.

Lee earned a spot in the Junior Olympics earlier this year when he placed in a top spot at the USA Taekwondo Illinois State Championship. USA Taekwondo is recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the national governing body for the sport of Taekwondo in the United States.

Lee is a student of Head Master Shik Lee of the White Tiger Martial Arts center in Wheeling, and was among a small group to actually medal.

"I can't even begin to describe how it felt when Cori won the first medal," Lee said. " ... and then he won a second. 'Wow' is all I could think to say. Cori is such a hard worker and he never stops trying to be great. I admire that spirit."

By earning silver medals in forms and board breaking for his age group, he placed himself in the top levels of the competition in which more than 3,600 competitors from across the country competed.
