Naperville's Last Fling: Flying dogs, messy spaghetti and burpees

Here's how you know it's Sunday at the Last Fling in downtown Naperville.

Yeah, there's the usual assortment of great bands and hot carnival rides and all of that.

But here's how you really know:

First, there are all sorts of dogs performing all sorts of stunts chasing all sorts of flying discs near Centennial Beach as part of the UFO North American Championships. So bottom line, you've got pooches flying all over the place.

Second, you can watch people get incredibly messy competing in a bunch of different eating contests involving cupcakes, ice cream and spaghetti. So you can make a killing if you want to sell Handi Wipes.

Finally, there's always somebody trying to set some kind of world record. This year, it was the Naperville Jaycees trying to set the record - possibly for the entire universe! - for the most people performing a burpee at the same time.

No, a burpee isn't what happens after you finish the cupcake eating contest. It's when you squat, put your hands down, kick your legs out behind you and then jump back up.

Naperville's attempt attracted 87 people, which was far short of the world record.

It turns out the most people who have ever done that in the same time at the same place is 515, which is the kind of thing you can bring up the next time your neighbor starts talking about politics.

The best part about Sunday at the Last Fling, though, is that the party isn't over - the festival continues from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday. For details, visit lastfling.org.
