Two Lake County deputies injured in Petite Lake crash

Two deputies with the Lake County sheriff's marine unit were injured Saturday when their boat was hit by another boat on Petite Lake, officials said.

The deputies were riding in one of two marine unit boats that were leaving the scene of a noise complaint with their navigation lights on about 11:30 p.m. A northbound Wellcraft boat hit one of the marine unit boats on the port side, sheriff's Detective Christopher Covelli said Sunday.

The two deputies on board were taken to an area hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, Covelli said. They were both treated and released.

The driver of the Wellcraft, a 39-year-old Lindenhurst woman, was cited with careless operation of a watercraft and given an equipment violation by Illinois Department of Natural Resources conservation police, Covelli said. Neither she nor a passenger were injured.

Both boats were damaged, he said, but neither sank.
