Indiana distributing hundreds of anti-overdose kits

ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) - The state of Indiana is distributing $150,000 worth of anti-overdose drugs to 20 counties hardest hit by heroin.

WRTV-TV reports (http://bit.ly/2ccXTWb ) local health authorities will receive 3,400 kits that include the anti-overdose drug naloxone, more commonly known by the brand name Narcan.

The drug can quickly revive someone who has stopped breathing after overdosing.

A law signed last year made the drug more widely available to Indiana residents. Before, only first responders and emergency workers were permitted to carry the drug.

Madison County, northeast of Indianapolis, is among the places receiving the drug, and county health officials will determine how to distribute it.

Madison County Public Health Coordinator Stephenie Grimes says addiction is such a problem there that they won't be able to provide a kit to everyone in need.
