Painter Sandy Sheagren Featured at YMCA Community Gallery in September

Artist Sandy Sheagren of Glenview will present a variety of her portraits and other paintings in the North Suburban YMCA's Community Gallery, with an exhibit that will open on September 3. The public is invited to meet the artist at a reception at the Y, located at 2705 Techny Road in Northbrook, on Tuesday, September 27 from 6:30 to 8:00pm.

Sheagren's paintings depict individuals in a wide array of societies, ranging from Haiti to Mexico to Africa and back to the United States. Sheagren's work reflects a lifetime of artistic exploration as well technical knowledge: she brings professional experience as a nurse and classes in medical illustration to her paintings that depict the human form.

"At a young age, I developed a fascination for anatomy and the human body from the works of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci," explains Sheagren. "A career in nursing and some study of medical illustration give me a knowledge base from which to work. In addition to rendering a likeness, I am particularly interested in how posture, body language, and color contribute to establishing a mood or feeling. Whether I capture the mood of the subject or my own mood, I want to validate the range of human emotions and how our bodies give messages about where our feelings lie."

Sheagren has exhibited work in numerous group and solo shows locally and nationally, including the Chicago Art Open, Woman Made Gallery, and Ravenswood Corridor Arts & Industry Walk in Chicago; Open Space Gallery in Allentown, PA; Lemon Street Gallery in Kenosha, WI; the Northern National Art Competition at Nicolet College in Rhinelander, WI; Chowan University in Murfreesboro, NC; Brubecks Art Gallery, in Mt. Carmel, IL; Marilyn Philby Gallery in Evanston; the Glenview Public Library; and the Illinois Artisans Program. She is a member of the Glenview Art League, the Portrait Society of America, and Woman Made Gallery.

The North Suburban YMCA's Community Gallery presents monthly exhibits to highlight the diverse talents of artists living and working in the northern suburbs. Most artwork is available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds supporting Visual Arts Programs at the Y. For more information, contact the YMCA at 847 272 7250 or visit nsymca.org.
