Schaumburg Septemberfest returns with live music, fireworks, parade

Schaumburg's 46th annual Septemberfest, featuring three days full of live music, carnival rides, family activities and more, kicks off Saturday on the village's municipal grounds near Schaumburg Road and Summit Drive.

Officials estimate more than 250,000 people will attend the free festival, which will be highlighted by a fireworks show Sunday night and what's billed as the suburbs' largest parade Monday morning.

Roxane Benvenuti, special events coordinator for the Schaumburg Department of Cultural Services, spends the better part of the year organizing Septemberfest.

“People plan their family reunions and get-togethers around the Labor Day weekend specifically for Septemberfest,” she said. “It's a nice way to end summer and welcome fall.”

Among the new components this year is a Craft Beer & Wine Tent, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day within the Arts & Crafts show, which has 250 exhibitors.

Main stage entertainment will be highlighted by a performance from 8:30 to 10 p.m. Sunday by platinum-selling rock band Smash Mouth, whose string of 1990s hits includes “All Star” and “Walkin' on the Sun.” The fireworks show will follow Smash Mouth.

The Purple Xperience, a Prince tribute band, will be the headline musical act Saturday night, and local favorite 7th heaven will perform on the main stage Monday night.

The theme for this year's Labor Day Parade is the celebration of Schaumburg's 60th anniversary. The two-mile parade will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Wise Road and Summit Drive and proceed north on Summit to Stock Port Lane.

Among the daily highlights will be the Schaumburg Police Department's Crime Prevention workshop, open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, featuring child ID fingerprinting, information about the Citizens' Police Academy and Neighborhood Watch, and personal safety information.

When it's time to eat, Septemberfest visitors can check out the Taste of Schaumburg area of the festival grounds to sample food from local vendors.

Benvenuti said her favorite part of organizing Septemberfest is seeing it all come together.

“Because it has been a part of the community for such a long time, a variety of different generations of people look forward to the fest each year,” she said.
