Girls swimming: Conant, Rolling Meadows win close MSL matchups

Conant got out to a winning start against Mid-Suburban League competition in girls swimming and diving on Wednesday, claiming a 102.5-83.5 victory at Buffalo Grove.

The Cougars were able to win all three relays, two of which featured double individual winner Aly Wooley. She had the top individual efforts in the 50-yard freestyle (26.22) and the 100 free (58.00), and the Cougars also got wins from Esther Song in the 100 (1:14.67), Kayla Wartman in the 100 back (1:07.64) and Lea Cejvan in the 100 fly (1:06.27).

Buffalo Grove's Alexa Jedryka won both the 200 and 500 freestyles, and Emily Schulstad took top honors in the 200 IM (2:25.56).

Rolling Meadows d. Schaumburg: The host Mustangs were winners in their first meet of the season, edging out the Saxons 94-91.

Grace Nykol won both the 200 and 500 freestyles for Rolling Meadows.

Other winners for the Mustangs included Betsy Zanocco in the 100 breast (1:17.93), Jenna Pors in the 100 fly (1:05.16) and Amelia Bogdal in diving (131.60).

The Saxons' Hanna Mollin took top honors in both the 200-yard IM (2:15.26) and the 100 back (1:02.52).

Schaumburg won the medley and 400 free relays and got victories from Ingrid Hay in the 100 free (59.33) and Lynda Steen in the 50 free (27.89).

Prospect d. Palatine: The visiting Pirates had double individual winners in Ellis Nelson and Jane Smith, but Prospect had far too much depth for Palatine in claiming a 112-58 victory, making the Knights' first home meet in their new pool a winner.

Nelson, a junior, was tops in the 200 IM (2:17.82) and 100 fly (1:03.82), while Smith, a freshman, took the 200 free (2:01.56) and 500 free (5:22.45).

But Prospect earned a 1-2 finish in the medley relay and got 1-2-3 individual placements in the 50 free, the 100 free, the 100 back and the 100 breaststroke.

The Knights' Meghan Schmit won diving with a score of 206.20, and Palatine's Julia Hanson was second at 172.35.

Fremd d. Elk Grove: Juniors Rebecca Ballo (200 IM) and Emily Bolger (50 free, 500 free), senior Emily Kini (100 free), sophomore Lauren Savage (200 free) and freshman Sophia Kuehn (100 fly) were among the winners as host Fremd got off to a winning start in the MSL with a 101-59 decision.

Barrington d. Wheeling: The defending conference champs displayed their firepower in a league opener at Wheeling as the Fillies came away with a 121-23 victory.

Individual winners for Barrington included Ally Penrod (50 free), Nicole Runtz (100 free), Maggie Emary (200 free, 100 back), Catherine Kitzman (100 fly), Becca Galovich (500 free) and Olivia Gawronski (100 breast).
